The 6th Annual New York Rainbow Book Fair Takes off Saturday, March 29.
The largest LGBT book event in the U.S., the 6th Annual Rainbow Book Fair will take off Saturday, March 29, from noon to 6 PM at the Holiday Inn Midtown, 440 West 57th Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues, in the Holiday Inn’s general ballroom where more than a 100 authors and publishers will be showing and selling books in all formats. Books today are no longer simply on the printed page, but in whatever format pleases you—print, digital, and audio/visual—they still expand the heart and mind and all the territories in between.
The Rainbow Book Fair picks up the whole span of the queer experience and brings it to life: from heart-pounding erotica to kids’ and Young Adult books, from the newest poetry and fiction to informative guides to your own life. Admission to the Fair is by a voluntary $3 donation—no one will be turned away—but fairgoers are urged to generously support this important event.
Panels this year include “Investigating Queer Boyhood,” a trailblazing discussion about the corrosive effects of homophobia on American boys: featuring Michael Kimmel, ED, Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities; Jim Elledge, author of the spellbinding new biography Henry Darger, Throwaway Boy; Collin Kelly, author of Conquering Venus; moderated by Perry Brass, author of King of Angels A Novel About the Genesis of Identity and Belief.
“The World of Glenway Wescott” centers on the classic American author at the forefront of American culture for much of the 20th century, who lived in a ménage a trois with the Museum of Modern Art’s Monroe Wheeler and famed photographer George Platt Lynes. It will be moderated by Wescott authority Jerry Rosco, and include Steven Haas, editor of George Platt Lynes: The Male Nudes; and playwright Joe Salvatore.
“Sappho and Whitman’s Children: Finding Our Own Line in Poetry,” moderated by wild and witty poet Michael Klein, will include a range of poets pushing in and out of the LGBT spectrum of word and sound.
Concurrently, the non-stop popular Come Hear! Poetry Salon curated by Nathaniel Siegel and Reggie Cabico will feature readings by dozens of poets, including Austin Alexis, Joel Allegretti, Geer Austin, Kyle Bella, Arianne Benford, David Bergman, Hansa Bergwall, Julia Bloch, Michael Brazell, Michael Broder, Guillermo Filice Castro, Steven Cordova, R. Erica Doyle, Davidson Garrett, the legendary John Giorno, Stephanie Gray, Walter Holland, ICE Gayle Johnson, Jee Leong Koh, Dean Kostos, Bill Kushner, Timothy Liu, Vinton Rafe McCabe, Kelly McQuain, Sean Patrick Mulroy, Stephen Riel, Christopher Schmidt, Eli Shipley, Richard Tayson, Chocolate Waters, Richard Marx Weinraub, LeNair Xavier, and others.
Plus a full day of author readings will inspire authors, readers, and fairgoers alike.
Sibling Rivalry Press, publisher of poetry reviews Assaracus and Adrienne, will hold a kick-off reading for the Fair at the Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, in the West Village, Friday, Mar. 28, @ 6 PM, hosted by Bryan Borland & Seth Pennington. Admission: $8, includes one free drink. Readers will include Dean Kostos, Charlie Bondhus, Sean Patrick Mulroy, Philip F. Clark, J.P. Howard, Darrel Alejandro, Kelly McQuain, Ian Young, Cheryl Boyce-Taylor, Anthony Lioi, and Perry Brass.

The 2013 Rainbow Book Fair, our 5th, was our largest and most successful so far. Exhibitors took over the entire ballroom space of the Holiday Inn Midtown, and we ran panels and readings all day. For the first time, we had a table from Random House, and we’re planning to expand our roster of major presses for the 6th Fair on March 29th, 2014. As always, we had an impressive roster of panels featuring both established and emerging writers. As part of our ongoing mission to expose fairgoers to the amazing range of LGBT writing, at the 2013 Fair we hosted panels on New Trans Fiction, Queer Asian American Writers, and Queer Sleuths. One of our best-attended panels featured writers who move between prose and poetry, talking about the connections and differences between the two genres. Once again, the Poetry Salon, curated by Nathaniel Siegel and Regie Cabico, was a huge success: the room was packed throughout the day and was a nonstop cavalcade of queer poets.
On March 29, 2014, we’ll be returning to the Holiday Inn for the 6th Rainbow Book Fair, and expanding our exhibition space. Hope to see you there!
